When to Replace Ducted Air Conditioning in Albury-Wodonga

The worst time to make this decision is the first genuinely hot week of summer, when the system has stopped and every installer in Albury-Wodonga is booked out. The decision is far easier made in advance, and most systems give you plenty of notice.

Age is the starting point, not the answer

A well-installed and reasonably maintained ducted system generally gives many years of service, and the second decade is usually where the questions start. Noise that has changed character — grinding, rattling from the outdoor unit, or a new hum — is worth investigating rather than tolerating.

Repeated repairs are the clearest signal of all. One fault is a fault. Three call-outs in two summers is a pattern, and the pattern rarely reverses.

Water where it should not be, or ice forming on the outdoor unit in cooling mode, indicates something genuinely wrong rather than something wearing out.

Refrigerant is the quiet deciding factor

This is the consideration most homeowners are unaware of, and it often settles the question.

Older systems use refrigerants that have been progressively phased down. As availability falls, the cost of recharging an older system rises, and for some refrigerants it becomes genuinely difficult to source.

A leak in a modern system is a repair. A leak in an older system running a phased-down refrigerant can cost enough that replacement becomes the sensible option regardless of how the rest of the unit is performing. If your system is old enough that this applies, it is worth knowing before something fails.

The repair-or-replace calculation

A reasonable way to think about it: compare the cost of the repair against the cost of replacement, then weigh that against how many years the repaired system is realistically likely to give you.

A modest repair on a system with years left is straightforward. A major repair — compressor, indoor coil, a significant refrigerant leak — on a system already well into its second decade rarely makes sense, because you are spending a substantial share of a new system's cost to extend an old one by an uncertain amount.

Timing it properly

Systems fail in the extremes, because that is when they work hardest. Replacing in the shoulder seasons means better availability, more time to compare options properly, and no stretch of the summer spent waiting.
