Evaporative Cooler Not Working? Common Faults in Albury-Wodonga and What to Check
The first hot day of the season is when evaporative coolers get switched on across Albury-Wodonga, and it is also when the phone starts ringing. A cooler that sat idle through winter is the one most likely to misbehave in October, and the fault is usually small. Warm air, no air, a strange smell, water where it should not be. Here is what each of those symptoms usually means, what you can safely check yourself, and when it is time to book a repair.
Blowing air but not cooling
This is the most common complaint and it nearly always comes back to water. An evaporative cooler only cools if the pads are wet and air is being drawn through them. If the fan runs but the air is warm, one of three things is happening.
The pump is not running or not delivering water. Listen at the roof unit on a still evening. You should hear the pump and water trickling over the pads. Silence, or the fan alone, points to the pump or its float switch.
The water supply is off. Many households turn the cooler water off at the isolation tap in autumn and forget it in spring. Check the tap that feeds the unit, usually near the hot water service or on an outside wall.
The pads are dry, blocked or worn out. Pads that have scaled up with the mineral content of local water, or that have simply reached the end of their life, will not wet evenly. Patches of dry pad let warm air straight through. If the cooler is more than a few seasons old and has never had the pads replaced, this is the likely story.
There is a fourth cause worth naming. On a very humid day, evaporative cooling does not work as well, because the air cannot absorb as much moisture. That is not a fault, it is physics, and it is the trade-off discussed in any honest evaporative versus refrigerated comparison for this region. Nothing happens at all
If the controller shows nothing, check the power first. Weak airflow

The last one is worth checking on any home where a duct was disturbed during other work.
Water leaking or dripping
Water running down the outside of the roof unit, staining on the ceiling below it, or water at a vent is not normal and should not be left. Common causes are a blocked drain, a float valve that has stuck open and overfilled the tank, a cracked tank on an older unit, or a perished seal. A small leak in the roof space can do a lot of damage to plaster before anyone notices, so treat any water where it should not be as a reason to switch the cooler off and call.
A musty or unpleasant smell
A cooler that has sat full of stale water over winter, or one whose tank does not drain properly between uses, can smell when it first starts up. Draining and flushing the tank and running the unit on fan only for a while usually clears it. If the smell persists, the pads may be harbouring growth and need replacing, and the drain cycle may not be working. Smell is also one of the reasons an autumn shutdown, draining the unit and closing the water off, is worth doing every year.
Water dripping from the vents
This is different from a roof leak. Water carried over from the pads into the ducts happens when the pump delivers too much water, when pads are damaged and letting water blow through, or when the unit is set to a speed that pulls water off saturated pads. It is a setup or maintenance issue rather than a serious fault, but it should be looked at before it damages the ducts or the ceiling around a vent.
What is safe to check yourself
The power at the switchboard. The water isolation tap. Whether the pump can be heard running. Whether the controller responds. Whether the unit was drained and shut down properly in autumn. That is about the limit. Anything on the roof, anything involving the control board, the fan motor, the pump or the water fittings should be left to someone who does it for a living, both for safety and because a cooler on a tin roof in an Albury summer is not a comfortable place to learn.
