Ducted or Split Systems: Which Suits an Albury-Wodonga Home?

This is the most common question we get asked before anything else, and the honest answer is that it depends far more on the house than on the equipment. Albury-Wodonga has a genuine four-season climate — summers that push well past thirty-five and winters that produce real frosts — so unlike milder parts of the country, whatever you install here has to work hard at both ends of the year.

Here is how the two approaches actually compare.

What each one is

A split system has an indoor head unit on a wall in one room and an outdoor unit outside, connected by refrigerant lines. It conditions that room. A multi-split runs several indoor heads from one outdoor unit, so you can cover three or four rooms with a single compressor and one outdoor location.

A ducted system has one indoor unit, usually in the roof space, connected to insulated ducting that feeds outlets throughout the house. One machine conditions the whole home, controlled from a central point and, in most modern installations, divided into zones.

Where ducted clearly wins

Whole-house comfort is the obvious one. Ducted conditions every room the ducting reaches, including hallways, bathrooms and bedrooms that a split system would never justify. On a cold Albury July morning that is the difference between a warm house and a warm living room.

Appearance is the second, and it matters more to people than they expect. All you see is a ceiling outlet in each room and a controller on the wall. There are no head units on the walls, and only one outdoor unit rather than three or four.

The third is capacity for larger homes. A four-bedroom house on a decent block in Thurgoona or Baranduda needs a lot of capacity, and covering it with individual splits means multiple outdoor units, multiple sets of pipework, and multiple things to service and eventually replace.

Zoning is what makes ducted efficient rather than wasteful, and it is where a lot of older installations fall down. A well-zoned system lets you condition the living areas during the day and the bedrooms at night without running the whole house at once. If you are weighing up ducted, zoning is the part worth spending money on rather than economising on.

Where splits clearly win

Retrofitting is the big one. Ducted needs somewhere for the ducting to go, which in practice means adequate roof space with reasonable access. Plenty of older Albury and Wodonga homes have low-pitch roofs, cathedral ceilings, or additions that never had a continuous roof cavity. A split system does not care about any of that — it needs a wall and a path to the outdoor unit.

Cost of entry is lower, and it can be staged. One split in the main living area is a much smaller commitment than a whole-house system, and you can add rooms over several years as budget allows.

Splits also win when you genuinely only condition one or two spaces. A couple living mainly in an open-plan living area, or a household where the bedrooms are comfortable without conditioning, will run a split more cheaply than a ducted system simply because they are heating and cooling less air.

And redundancy is real. Four splits means four independent systems. If one fails in February, the rest of the house still works. When a ducted unit fails, nothing works.

Running costs

This is where the comparison is most often misrepresented, in both directions.

Per unit of heating or cooling delivered, modern inverter splits and modern inverter ducted systems are broadly comparable in efficiency. The difference in your bill comes from how much of the house you are conditioning, not from the technology.

Running one split in a living room costs less than running a whole ducted system across an entire house, which is not a fair comparison. Conditioning the same four rooms with four splits versus a zoned ducted system is much closer, and which wins depends on the zoning quality, the duct insulation, and how the household actually uses it.

Where ducted loses badly is when it is unzoned or poorly zoned, because you end up heating bedrooms all evening to keep the living room comfortable. Where splits lose is when a household runs four of them simultaneously to do what one properly zoned ducted system would have done more efficiently.

The local considerations

Winter matters here in a way it does not further north. Reverse cycle handles Albury-Wodonga winters well and is generally the cheapest way to heat, but capacity has to be selected for the design heating load rather than for the cooling load, which is a common mistake in a market that thinks about summer first.

Roof space is the practical constraint that settles many of these conversations. If the roof cavity cannot take the ducting, ducted is not an option regardless of preference. That is genuinely the first thing worth checking, and it is a five-minute inspection.

Existing infrastructure matters too. Homes here very often already have gas ducted heating, which means ducting is already in place. In that situation, add-on refrigerated cooling that uses the existing ductwork can be far cheaper than any equivalent split installation, and whether the existing ducting is reusable is a question worth asking early.

A reasonable rule of thumb

Go ducted if you have a three-bedroom-plus home with usable roof space, you want whole-house comfort, and you intend to stay long enough to get the benefit. Zone it properly.

Go splits if you are retrofitting a house with no practical roof access, you only condition one or two spaces, you want to stage the spend, or you want redundancy.

And in a house that already has gas ducted heating, look seriously at add-on cooling before pricing anything else, because half the expensive part of a ducted installation may already be in your roof.

The right answer is a site visit rather than a phone quote. Roof access, existing ductwork, insulation, window orientation and how the household actually lives all change the recommendation, and none of them are visible from an address.
